Web/Mobile App Critique - From Hotmail to Gmail: My Mobile App Glow-up

I’ll admit it - I was a Hotmail loyalist until about three months ago. Yes… HOTMAIL. But switching to Gmail has been a surprisingly fun little tech adventure, and reviewing the Gmail mobile app gave me the perfect excuse to explore it more deeply.

Gmail is one of the most widely used email platforms out there, and its mobile app makes it easy to manage messages, contacts, and productivity tools on the go. Once I got past the initial “Where is everything?” phase, I found the interface simple, clean, and pretty intuitive.

Things I like so far...

Tabbed inbox: Gmail automatically sorts emails into Primary, Social, Promotions, and Updates. It keeps things organized - though my Promotions tab is basically a digital junk drawer of marketing emails I never asked for. I’m convinced it regenerates faster than I can delete.

Labels & search: You can create custom labels and even set rules to auto‑sort incoming mail. The search bar at the top is a lifesaver - type a keyword, and boom, your email hunt is over.

Swipe gestures: Swipe left to delete, swipe right to archive. It’s oddly satisfying and makes inbox cleanup feel like a mini‑game.

Visual cues: Profile pictures next to messages help me quickly spot who’s who. Small touch, big impact.

Functionality...

One of the biggest perks of switching to Gmail has been how seamlessly it connects with other Google apps like Docs and Drive. It makes sharing, saving, and collaborating feel effortless. Coming from the Microsoft/Hotmail ecosystem, I expected a learning curve, but the transition was smoother than I thought.

Composing, replying, and forwarding emails all feel familiar if you’ve used any email platform before. I’ve heard that juggling multiple Gmail accounts can be a headache, but since I only use one, I haven’t run into that issue personally.

Areas for Improvement...

Even though I’m enjoying Gmail, there are a few things I’d tweak:

1. Easier account switching I’ve seen how clunky it can be for people with multiple accounts. A quick toggle or swipe gesture would make life so much easier.

2. Hide unwanted tabs Let me hide the Promotions tab. Please. I know it’s 99% stuff I don’t need, but I still can’t bring myself to delete it all. Out of sight, out of mind would be a dream.

3. Better attachment handling This one threw me off. Previewing attachments often requires opening another app, and attachments stay buried in the original email within a long chain. I’ve lost files in there like socks in a dryer.

Overall, the Gmail mobile app has been a solid upgrade from my Hotmail days. It’s clean, functional, and packed with features that make email management easier - once you get the hang of it. And hey, if I can finally “catch up with the times,” anyone can.
